Director Stephen Lance describes his first feature My Mistress as “an impressionistic look at my teenage years”. It stars French actress Emmanuelle Beart as an S&M mistress who moves to a Queensland suburb, and Harrison Gilbertson as a young man who is drawn to her at a time of emotional turmoil after the sudden death of his father.
The film is not directly autobiographical, Lance says, although elements of it are close to his own experiences. “I wanted to make a film about grief and about unusual connections between mothers and sons, and between a boy and an older woman. I was interested in sexuality – the idea of identity and sexuality runs through my short films”. He added an S&M element, he says, through an interest “in the way that S&M is used as a therapeutic process for people who engage in role playing”.
